S’well: My Review of the Water Bottles I Have Come to Love (Yes, I Own Twelve)

Swell Water Bottles are by far nothing new, and if you’ve never discovered them, you’re about to thank me. After reading my post I’m sure you will order your very first swell water bottle if you don’t have one already. The stainless steel bottles are true to the company’s promise of utilizing technology that can really keep hot drinks truly hot for 24 hours and chilly beverages cold for 12 hours.

Hot And Cold Drinks In A Swell Water Bottle

You can keep your coffee or hot drinks warm when you push through an all-nighter and end up taking pity on the people running back and forth to the coffee shop. Also, don’t hesitate to take that day-long hike and enjoy crispy cool water from your S’well water bottle from the trailhead to the mountaintop. I’ve even left my S’well water bottle in my hot car with ice cubes for hours while I was at the beach and after a long day, the water was still ice cold drinking water when I got back. It definitely keeps the water cold.

With this said, I’m going to cover my personal review of a brand that I have come to love and I know you will too!

The stainless steel water bottle company has been around for several years and shows no sign of slowing down. These ultra-chic, ultra-trendy, water bottles have been seen cruising in the cup holders of trendsetters and those wishing to be eco-friendly for what feels like forever. However, I fell in love with S’well recently for a variety of reasons (side note: I’m now addicted and have a variety of bottle styles I showcase on my kitchen shelf like each was a crystal wine glass).

First and foremost, S’well has completely removed that shaming guilt I feel every time I cringe at the click and crack of opening plastic water bottles – the scourge of the environment. Second, the glorious colors and patterns! It feels a little odd to list my top two favorite things like the fact that S’well bottles hugely benefit our environment, right next to the fact that I love the ultra-pinkness of my Breast Cancer support S’well or the fact that I’m now Southern (and live in Lynchburg, VA) so anything you can monogram, or make personalized or engraved attracts me like a bird to a shiny object, but that’s life and I’m becoming a Southern girl at heart very quickly.

A Peek at S’well Water Bottles

Not only are S’well water bottles basically the coolest thing since sliced cheesecake (because sliced bread is not cool at all), but the company has the highest standards for its products and is focused on actually working to wipe out one of the worst facets of environmental pollution: plastic water bottles. The Swell metal water bottles are actually made in the USA, which seems rare these days, but I try to support US-made products as much as I can. I love using a reusable bottle as much as I can to help keep the environment and American forests clean.

What S’well Bottle Size Should I Choose?

Selecting my S’well water bottle size was a tough choice when I was a newbie, but it’s a good thing the bottles come in a variety of liquid capacities. At first, I wondered if the 9oz was too small, or if the 17oz too big… I had so many questions.

I ended up settling on the 17oz for my first purchase and was thrilled with the size. It fits perfectly in a cup holder and holds enough water or coffee to make it through a half-day meeting without being bulky on the conference table.

S’well has officially gone beyond the bottle. These new products give more variety to ways you can use your S’well to sip and swell in style, along with more sizes.

To date, here is the full line of swell bottles in style and dimensions of ounces each has the capacity for.

  • The traditional S’well water bottle comes in 9oz, 17 oz (500ml) and a 25oz (750ml).
  • The new oversize Roamers come in 40oz and 60oz.
  • The Travelers bottles come in 12oz, 16oz and 20oz.
  • The brand new Tumblers comes in a sleek open-top 10 oz bottle size and 18oz size.

Why I Choose S’well

Living in the South, Yeti is a popular brand due to its tie-in with the boating lifestyle. Yet, I don’t like the boring fact that they only come in a few colors.

The Manna water bottle brand fits really awkwardly in my hand and the cap falls off so I’m not a fan.

Also, the hydro flask is just not chic and stylish so not my first choice. Also, these other water bottle brands do not look proper to bring into a professional meeting and if you have a swell bottle instead of glass water bottles, you don’t have to take the risk of it breaking and shattering glass everywhere if you drop it.

S’well has so many fun designs and colors that it makes me want to purchase again and again. They are always coming up with new designs, which is important. I also feel like Swell insulated bottles have a more feminine feel to them. My guy friends don’t agree, but I love the smooth curve of the bottle and the availability of so many fun colors to choose from that can express my personal style. My favorite new design rollout is Liberty London, which is an iconic splattering of a beautiful floral painting.

Traveling With S’well Water Bottles

S’well water bottles are also excellent for travel, no matter where you’re going. They are great to keep on hand when you’re waiting to catch a plane, keeping you from buying the high-priced airport water bottles. Just keep in mind to empty your Swell water bottle before going through airport TSA security. You don’t want to risk them confiscating your beloved bottle. That almost happened to me once but I didn’t want to lose my bottle so I went to the back of the line, dumped the water out of my bottle and waited even longer to get through security. But thankfully I made it to my flight on time with no delays!

Swells are also great to pack for vacation. The fabulous insulation is great to keep your white wine chilled or champagne sparkling for trips to the beach in the summer or just sitting outside on your cottage patio on a warm Friday evening.

S’well Styles & Designs

S’well has upped their game with a rollout of a ton of great new designs and fun things this past year.

You can choose a variety of original colors: traditional silver, purple, blue, black, brown, gold, gray, apple green, orange, pink, rose gold, red and yellow. But there are many wonderful new choices. Don’t forget about Sip by Swell either!

You can find Sip by S’well at Target and there really aren’t any differences between normal swell bottles and sip by swell bottles, just the name, the size of the bottle and the price. Also, sip by swell has some really great designs and patterns and make sizes that are perfect for kids.

My S’well Water Bottle Favorites

Below I’ve listed just a few of my favorite swell water bottle styles.

I adore the calming pattern and design of the S’well Aspen water bottle (available at Neiman Marcus).

The limited-edition styles such as a Lilly Pulitzer Swell water bottles are amazing and to die for. Lilly Pulitzer first released them in stores and online at Starbucks and there were a limited number and they sold out fast! But because they were so popular they have released them a few times on their website (lillypulitzer.com) and have come out with new designs too.

The styles that come out in the summer months are adorable, the bottles that have a crab, crawfish or whale on them. (Seasonal)

The Madonna Lily is also one of my favorite floral designs. It has such beautiful colors that have light watercolor details. It almost looks like it was hand-drawn and painted.

Anything from the Textile Collection is great. It draws pattern inspiration from Africa and India and includes a lot of animal print patterns. My favorite design from this collection is the Cheetah. You can’t go wrong with cheetah print.

The Galaxy Collection has an almost luminous feel and I love the pearl-white, metallic Milky Way bottle.

They also have a variety of other really interesting options such as the adorable hand-painted bottles that you may have seen a celebrity or two walking around with such as a personalized Lily Pulitzer theme. I found out about the Lilly Pulitzer bottles from a group I found on Facebook!

There is an entire page for student store collections with its own styles. My favorite is the Santorini style.

I even found a great S’well bottle on Etsy that was painted with owls! You can find many options on Pinterest if you are crafty and want to personalize your own bottle at home. You can even use your Cricut or Silhouette cutting machines to personalize your bottle with your name or other vinyl designs. Of course, stickers work too!

You can also buy bottles in bulk for things like convention swag or corporate gifts. The wood grain or teakwood styles are essentially nice for professional gifts and are good to give anyone. The company also offers a gift card option if you don’t know a friend’s style. There are also options for fun decals to add to your swell water bottle.

Where Can I Find S’well Water Bottles?

Due to the popularity of S’well bottles, they are typically available in stores through most major retailers. These are the most popular major retailers near me that I know keep S’well bottles in stock:

You can also, of course, buy a S’well water bottle on Amazon too. Some people prefer to buy things online! I bought one of my all-time favorites, the Lace, on the world’s best online retailer… Amazon. Of course, it came exactly as I expected and it’s great because if you have Amazon Prime it’s free 2-day shipping. You can’t beat that. Just be careful because sometimes Swell bottles on amazon are sold by third parties so they may or may not offer the prime 2 day shipping option.

Here are some of my favorite swell water bottles that are sold on Amazon. The cool thing is, a lot of the colors and designs come in multiple sizes.

As a side note, swell bottles are also available at some select locations in Canada and Australia.

What Drinks Can I Store In My S’well Water Bottle?

I like storing fresh clean filtered water in my swell water bottle above all else. It tastes so much better than bottled water and you don’t have to worry about tons of plastic bottles in your car or laying around your house.

You can also store iced or hot tea, hot cocoa, and coffee. Oh and don’t forget that you can even take ice cream and milkshakes on the go in the swell travelers or tumblers.

Another drink I love to take on the go in my swell water bottle is a fruit smoothie. Be creative and store your favorite drinks in your swell. Like every typical preppy and white girl, I’ve been loving La Croix lately (check out my blog post reviewing LaCroix sparkling water) and I’d hate to spill it in the can, so I transfer it to my swell and it’s good on the go.

Some people like to store a bottle of wine in their swell bottle. You may not be able to fit a whole bottle of wine in your swell, but it’s worth a try. If you choose to put alcohol in your swell make sure you don’t drive with an open container containing alcohol and drink responsibly.

Cleaning My Insulated Stainless Steel Swell Water Bottle

S’well bottles are simple to clean and take care of. The company offers a line of accessories that make it easy to clean out your bottles. You can buy a bristle bottle brush cleaner for washing inside the bottle. If you have a wide mouth swell water bottle like the traveler or tumbler, you may not need the bottle brush to clean your swell, as you could use a dishcloth or normal dish sponge.

However, I found that my swell water bottle needs cleaning a lot less frequently than a traditional coffee mug or thermos. If you’re wondering, the company also offers replacement caps and lids for those who frequently lose them, such as me. There are also a variety of other accessories like a strap or a sleeve for the bottle.

Save Some Dough On A S’well Water Bottle

S’well water bottles are by no means pricey (Google how much is a Swell water bottle), especially when you consider that they last for years and years. The bottles cost between $25 and $45 typically unless they are on sale. Also, the special collaboration swell bottles like Lilly Pulitzer are a little bit more expensive than typical swell bottles.

I am a true bargain Betty, so I’m always looking for an alternative to save a little extra money. In case you find it helpful, I wanted to share a few ways you can save some on your S’well too.

A lot of sites are selling knock-off fake swell bottles or ones that look like swells, but I don’t recommend these alternatives. You won’t get the same quality craftsmanship and the temperature control that S’well guarantees. S’well bottle competitors are simply no comparison to a true S’well. If you buy a knock-off swell water bottle you will need to worry about paint chipping and it’s likely the bottle is made in China or overseas.

S’well had a dedication section for sale items on its website. You can find great patterns or solid colors that are discounted, yet still trendy. For example, the super-chic Marble line has some bottles on sale right now. I recommend checking that out first as you know you will get S’well’s excellent customer service, warranty, and great return policy. You can also find a coupon code that will give you a discount. Just check on sites like retailmenot.com, coupons.com or honey.com.

Also, swell is doing a new thing where you can get a special one of a kind coupon code for 10% off. All you have to do is enter your email when it pops up on the screen after being on the website for a little bit. Giving your email subscribes you to their newsletter to receive alerts on new designs and discounts when they have sales running.

S’well Customer Service

Supporting companies that stand behind their products and really value their customers is important to me.

I’ve only dealt with Swell customer service once after ordering my swell bottle directly off of the swell.com website. They sent me the wrong color.

I didn’t have to send in any pictures or proof and they sent me the right bottle.

You will never go wrong with swell and their customer service will have your back no matter what. I’m sure that someone has had a negative experience before, but I will continue to recommend S’well water bottles.
